Soon people will be able to use superfast internet even in remote areas, Jio’s satcom services may be started, approval has been received

Date:

New Delhi. Soon, it will be easy to use the internet and talk on a better network even in remote areas where regular telecom services are not available. Because, Jio Platforms has received approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe). With this final approval, the company will be able to launch satellite communication (satcom) services in the country. This approval has come at a time when global giants like Elon Musk-owned Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper are waiting for regulatory approval to start their services in the country. In such a situation, satcom services will be provided by Jio Platforms, going ahead of Amazon and Starlink.

Bharti Enterprises-backed Eutelsat OneWeb is the only other company that has already received all the necessary approvals. Once the spectrum is allocated by the government, Jio Platforms will provide satellite internet services with its joint venture partner, Luxembourg-based satcom company SES.

According to officials, along with Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) and Internet Service Provider (ISP) licenses, any activity related to space communications requires authorization from IN-SPACe. Authorization is required for a variety of activities such as launching, operating satellites, establishing communication, space transportation systems, etc.

What are SATCOM services?

Satellite communications (SATCOM) services use satellites to transmit and receive data and voice. They can be used in a variety of areas. They can be used especially where services cannot be provided through traditional land-based methods. Similarly, during a disaster, telecom services can be easily provided through SATCOM even if the local telecom infrastructure is damaged. Also, SATCOM services can support in-flight, rail and maritime communications.
