New Delhi. Soon, smartphones sold in India may require a standard charging connector. This could be the USB Type-C port used worldwide. This information has come from a report. The purpose of this new rule is to enable users to charge multiple devices using a single cable. So that e-waste can be reduced. This is similar to the order issued by the European Union (EU) in 2022 which will take effect later this year. Later, the Type-C port can also be made mandatory for laptops by the government.
Citing people familiar with the matter, Livemint reported that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) may soon direct device makers to include a similar charging port in smartphones and tablets. This directive is also said to include laptops, but the rule will reportedly come into effect from 2026. These charging ports are expected to be USB Type-C connectors.
According to the report, the order will not include wearable devices such as smartwatches and basic feature phones. The move will reportedly come into effect from June 2025 and is said to be aimed at reducing e-waste generated from the multiple types of cables used by the devices, allowing users to charge all their devices from one cable.

The European Union also passed a similar order in 2022, making USB Type-C the standard charging port in hardware such as smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld video-game consoles, and portable speakers. The move forced Apple to replace its proprietary Lightning port with USB Type-C, starting with the iPhone 15 series in 2023.
In November 2022, the government had reportedly reached a consensus to adopt USB Type-C as the standard method of charging. After a meeting with industry stakeholders, Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh had said at the time that during the meeting, there was a broad consensus among stakeholders on adopting USB Type-C as the charging port for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
Although no timeline was given at the time, it looks like India is now gearing up to announce its common charger rules. A recent report also suggested that MeitY will provide an additional six months to ‘ensure compliance’ by all stakeholders.
