It was observed that doing light exercise can have a significant effect on the prefrontal cortex of the brain responsible for cognitive development.

Enhancing cognitive functioning is important to enhance decision-making skills, memory and attention in children. A recent study conducted by researchers at Waseda University demonstrated the positive effects of light-intensity exercise on children’s brains. Studies have shown that simple, low-impact, short workouts can increase blood flow to the prefrontal cortex – the part of the brain responsible for vital cognitive function.

Researchers have designed a workout routine that children can easily do at home or in between classes.

This study could help enhance the quality of life of children and improve their cognitive functions – especially those who lead sedentary lifestyles devoid of much physical activity.

Concern about brain development in children

It has been observed that around 81 percent of children worldwide do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity on a regular basis. This can significantly affect their cognitive functions and brain development. Generally, existing studies suggest moderate to vigorous exercise for better cognitive development – however, a recent study describes a physical workout that children can easily do.

Study author Takashi Naito, a doctoral student at Waseda University and visiting researcher at the Waseda Institute of Human Performance, said they examined the effect of light exercise on cerebral blood flow. They then created a workout routine that can be easily done at home or between classes.

This study was conducted on 41 healthy children of all ages studying in school. They were introduced to several simple exercises that could be done anywhere. The exercises are as follows:

  • Upward stretch (reaching upward with folded hands)
  • Shoulder stretch (extending one arm across the chest)
  • Elbow circles (widely rotating the elbows)
  • Trunk twist (twisting the upper body)
  • washing hands (rubbing hands together)
  • thumb and pinky (finger dexterity exercises)
  • Single-leg balancing (standing on one leg for balance)

learning outcome:

It was observed that when students did these exercises, blood flow to the prefrontal cortex increased. This increased blood flow is a sign of increased brain activity, especially in areas of the brain responsible for decision making, attention, focus, and memory.
