You must have seen glass artwork in palaces and hotels. This glass artwork is called Thikri art. When Queen Victoria came to Mewar, special artisans were called with her from Belgium. They did this artwork in the City Palace of Udaipur city. Queen Victoria stayed at the same place.
Mirror art to welcome Queen Victoria
Udaipur city’s Thikri art expert Subhash Chandra Sharma tells that Queen Victoria was coming to Udaipur. To welcome her, a special Victoria Palace was prepared in room number seven of the City Palace here. Special artisans were called from Belgium for this. Those artisans needed helpers. Then the Maharana of Udaipur taught this art to the people here and then got Sheesh Mahals built in different cities and palaces of Rajasthan.
Shishakala is in trend again
Thikri artist Tarun Sharma says that since then this art is being liked a lot. Small glass artifacts are pasted on paper and carved. First of all a sketch is made on paper with a pencil. After that small glasses are pasted on it upside down. Then a layer is prepared with the help of Fevicol. This sheet is prepared from it and they are installed in hotels and big mansions. These days many people are liking this interior in their homes as well. If we talk about the price, then the artifacts of Thikri art are made at the rate of 1200 to 1500 rupees per square feet.
