Summer Smiles:

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Neha Chhabra, co-founder of Bentodent, shared, “Many commercial toothpastes available for sensitivity contain potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride, but opt for natural toothpastes instead. These are formulated with ingredients such as bentonite clay, clove, propolis, and guava leaf, which not only reduce sensitivity but also avoid potential side effects, such as irritation and taste changes, which are usually associated with chemical ingredients.”

“In addition, daily flossing removes plaque and bacteria buildup at the gum line, which helps keep gums healthy and reduces sensitivity associated with gum recession. Everyone should stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day as this helps wash away food particles and can reduce the effects of acidic or sugary drinks. Calcium is important for strong teeth, so include dairy products like yogurt and cheese in your diet to enhance your oral care regimen,” she added.

Dr Neha further suggests, “For added enamel protection, use an alcohol-free herbal mouthwash, which may be beneficial for sensitive teeth. Herbal mouthwashes usually contain natural ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile and peppermint, which soothe gums without causing irritation. Eating mindfully, enjoying summer foods in moderation and rinsing with water after meals to neutralise acids are also part of a comprehensive care plan to ensure a pleasant and sensitivity-free summer.”

Enjoy summer without toothache:

Dr Sheetal Kochhar, Consultant – General Dentistry & Endodontics & Dental Care, Endodontist & Cosmetic Dentist at Max Multi Speciality Centre, explained, “Sensitivity refers to pain/discomfort that is triggered by consuming cold, hot, sour or acidic foods or liquids. It is a result of enamel wear, decay, exposed root surfaces, broken or fractured teeth, dislodged fillings or gum disease. To avoid sensitivity, one should have regular oral health checkups and use a desensitizing toothpaste as this can help prevent pain associated with tooth sensitivity. Your dentist can help you choose the right toothpaste. The use of fluoride by the dentist can help strengthen teeth and reduce sensitivity.”

He elaborated, “If you have deep decay or enamel loss, root canal treatment can be performed. Your dentist may recommend you to undergo root canal treatment. A soft-bristled toothbrush with gentle strokes should be used. Gum grafts can also be performed to cover the exposed root surfaces. People who have a habit of grinding their teeth should wear a night guard to prevent enamel loss. Acidic foods should be avoided and they should drink plenty of water after eating to balance the acidic levels in the mouth.”
