TMC leader Derek O’Brien said on Friday that his party will contest the general elections alone. The Rajya Sabha member said there is no change in the party’s stand to contest all 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, some in Assam and one seat in Meghalaya. PTI informed of.
“A few weeks ago…West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that TMC is contesting on all 42 seats in Bengal. We are also in the fray on some seats in Assam and Tura Lok Sabha seat in Meghalaya. There has been no change in this situation,” O’Brien said.
Mamata Banerjee had earlier decided not to be part of the India faction in her state. But Congress leaders say that the party was discussing seat sharing with TMC before the elections. This came after the Congress party and Samajwadi Party (SP) on Thursday agreed on seat-sharing arrangements as part of the India Bloc in Uttar Pradesh.
On Friday, Congress’s communication in-charge general secretary Jairam Ramesh once again told reporters in Delhi that talks are going on with West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee but the seat share has not been decided yet.
An agreement in West Bengal will boost the morale of the crisis-hit Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), especially after the JD-U’s exit.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, out of 42 seats in West Bengal, TMC won 22 and BJP won 18 seats. Congress won the remaining two seats.
Talks on alliance are going on elsewhere also. In Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party has agreed to contest on four Lok Sabha seats, while the Congress will field candidates on three seats as per the seat-sharing formula to be announced on Saturday.
Congress will field candidates in North East, Chandni Chowk and North West and AAP will field candidates in New Delhi, East Delhi, West Delhi and South Delhi seats.
The BJP had won all seven seats in Delhi in both the 2014 and 2019 general elections.
The Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), an alliance of major opposition parties, came together last year to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The inaugural meeting of the opposition alliance was held on 23 June in Patna, Bihar.
