Due to extreme heat and soaring temperatures, all schools in Kamrup (Metro) district, which mainly comprises Guwahati city, have been ordered closed for four days from September 24 to 27.
Various incidents of students falling sick and fainting due to extreme heat and dehydration have been reported from several schools, the District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO) said on Monday.
The DEEO said in an official order, “It has been decided that all government/parochial/private schools operating under Kamrup Metro district will remain closed from 24th to 27th September 2024 due to extreme heat and rising temperatures.”
On Sunday, the maximum temperature in the state capital settled at 37.9 degrees Celsius, 5.9 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was also recorded at 28.2 degrees Celsius, 3.8 degrees above normal.
Further, the DEEO said that this decision has been taken to protect the students from the ill-effects of extreme heat.
Meanwhile, the regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that Guwahati will remain generally cloudy with one or two rains or thundershowers during the next two to three days.

The DEEO’s September 20 order said school timings would start early and end accordingly.
It said, “Principals/Headmasters/Headteachers of all private schools in Dibrugarh district affiliated to AHSEC/SEBA/ICSE/CBSE are hereby informed for general information that due to the ongoing intense heat wave in the district, in consultation with the District Commissioner, the schools have to follow the following guidelines to deal with the ill effects of intense heat till further notice.”
