Joint pain is common among most people during monsoon. Want to avoid joint pain? Follow these essential tips and thank us later!
During monsoon, changes in humidity and temperature affect the joints, causing discomfort and pain as the muscles near the joints contract due to the sudden drop in temperature, causing stiffness and loss of flexibility in the joints. The high level of humidity present in the air also causes inflammation in the joints, leading to serious conditions like arthritis.
Moreover, many people become inactive during the rainy season and do not exercise daily and this can also lead to joint pain. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Vishal Lapshia, Joint Replacement and Arthroplasty Surgeon at AIIMS Hospital, Dombivli, suggests keeping joints healthy during monsoon by following these important tips:
1. Be active:
To keep the joints mobile and reduce stiffness, try doing gentle exercises like yoga or swimming. Focus on stretching and avoid doing any strenuous activity that can cause further problems for the joints. Seek the help of a physiotherapist to control joint pain and improve the quality of life.
2. Pay attention to diet:
To control joint pain, try to include anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric, ginger and leafy greens, omega-3 rich fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel, nuts and seeds, berries and sweet potatoes. Stay away from junk, spicy, oily, canned and processed foods that cause inflammation and pain. Stay hydrated by drinking at least 10-14 glasses of water to lubricate your joints. You should take vitamin D and calcium supplements as prescribed by the doctor.
3. Invest in proper footwear
Wear proper shoes to provide good support and reduce pressure on joints while walking on slippery surfaces during the rainy season.
4. Opt for hot and cold compress:
Did you know? Hot or cold compress or any other compress can help you get rid of joint pain. Try to take enough rest and get relief from muscle and joint pain.
5. Maintain optimal weight:
It is important to maintain a healthy weight during monsoon by exercising at home and eating well. Being overweight or obese can put pressure on the joints causing unbearable pain that can hamper one’s daily routine. Follow these measures and prevent joint pain this monsoon!
