Sambhal violence updates: A day after violence broke out in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district over a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque, police registered seven FIRs, including those against Samajwadi Party MP Zia-ur-Rehman Burke and Sohail Iqbal, son of local SP MLA Iqbal Mehmood. Three people were killed and several others, including security personnel and administration officials, were injured when protesters opposing the survey of the royal Jama Masjid clashed with police on Sunday.

- Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar said on Monday that seven FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence. Six people, including Burke and Iqbal, were named and 2,750 others were mentioned as unidentified.
He said, “The situation worsened due to BARC’s earlier statement. For this they were issued notice earlier.”
The officer said Burke’s “Jama Masjid ki hifazat” (protection of Jama Masjid) remarks mobilized the crowd.
It is noteworthy that the MP was not in Sambhal on Sunday but in Bengaluru.
Police said Burke’s name has been included in the FIR on the basis of his previous statements.
- Magisterial inquiry into the violence has been ordered.
- Following the orders of the district administration, all schools were closed on Monday.

The survey could not be completed last Tuesday and was planned for Sunday to avoid disruption of afternoon prayers.
- Supreme Court lawyer Vishnu Shankar Jain, who is the petitioner in the case, had earlier said that the court of Civil Judge (Senior Division) had ordered the formation of an “advocate commission” to survey the mosque.
Jain claimed that the court said that a videography and photography survey should be conducted and the report should be filed through the commission.
