Seatbelts available in vehicles are a very important safety feature. Former Tata Group Chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a road accident in September 2022 due to not wearing a seatbelt. In India, people sitting at the back of the car often do not use seat belts. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also advised pillion passengers to use seat belts and has made failure to do so a punishable offence. However, in many cases of road accidents, it is being seen that the rear passengers do not use seat belts. Due to this, in case of an accident, they die due to serious injuries.
However, now the government is going to change a rule related to car seat belt, which is expected to increase the safety of car passengers. Let us tell you that from April 1, 2025, the feature of seat belt alarm has been made mandatory for the rear seat also in the country. This means that now the car will also warn the rear passengers to wear seat belts.
This feature can save life
The issue of use of rear seat belts came into focus when former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a high-speed crash. Cyrus was sitting in the back seat of the car and was not wearing a seatbelt. After this accident, the government had issued an order to strictly follow the rule of use of seat belts for the rear seat passengers.
With the availability of belt alarm in the rear seats also, passengers will now hear the seat belt alarm again and again. This will also ensure the safety of the passengers sitting behind. At present, only front seat belt alarm is mandatory in all cars sold in the country.
This feature will be mandatory from April 2025
The government is going to make this feature mandatory in cars in the country from April 1, 2025. That means all cars sold from this date will come with rear seat belt alarm. WHO study says that wearing rear seat belt reduces the risk of death by 25%.
