Radhika Merchant’s unique floral dupatta made of real flowers caught everyone’s attention
Businessman Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding rituals have made every bride turn to social media for fashion inspiration. On Tuesday, Merchant’s haldi outfit grabbed everyone’s attention when filmmaker-stylist Rhea Kapoor shared pictures of the bride’s canary yellow embroidered lehenga by designer Anamika Khanna. Merchant accessorised her look with traditional floral jewellery including hathphool, kalire, haar and jhumkas. But what caught everyone’s attention was the unique floral dupatta made of real flowers.
Soon after the look started trending on social media, Mumbai-based Srishti Calcuttawala, who designed the dupatta for Merchant, was “flooded with messages and calls” from brides-to-be. “Some are asking for the exact same dupatta, while others want it to be customised to their liking,” the artist said.
For Merchant, he designed a fresh and fragrant tagar kali (jasmine buds) jaal dupatta with about 2 kg of yellow marigold flowers. Calcuttawala revealed that he had just a day’s notice to design the dupatta. “It took about six-seven hours for five artisans to make it,” he said.
How much does it cost?
Merchant’s floral dupatta was made using tagar kali (jasmine buds) and about 2 kg of genda phool (marigold flowers). The price of such dupattas starts from Rs 150. 15,000. Her floral jewellery set – which includes floral earrings, hathphool and kalire – along with a dupatta, costs around Rs 15,000. 27,000.
‘game changer’
Stylist Isha Bhansali believes that floral dupattas will be very popular among brides in the upcoming wedding season. She says, “This floral attire is going to be a big change for the women who are going to be brides. There is a novelty in it, but it has to be handled carefully, because real, fresh flowers on the dupatta can get spoilt quickly if not designed properly.”
