Protests broke out at AIIMS Gorakhpur after an MBBS student accused a security guard of allegedly attempting to sexually assault her, officials said on Saturday.
Police said that the incident happened around 9 pm on Friday night when the student was going to her hostel near gate number four.
Guard Satpal Yadav allegedly made inappropriate remarks but she ignored him and moved ahead. He then allegedly chased her, forcibly held her hand and tried to drag her into nearby bushes, they said.
He said the student protested and created noise, forcing other students to intervene.
Officials said the students managed to catch the accused during the commotion but other security guards intervened and allegedly helped him escape.
He said the angry students staged a protest at the gate demanding the arrest of Yadav and action against those who helped him escape.
AIIMS officials and police reached the spot to pacify the students and at 12.30 pm, police took Yadav into custody from Pipraich. He said that the protest was ended after assurance of strict action against the accused.
AIIMS Medical Superintendent Vikas Srivastava said a case has been registered under Section 74 of the Indian Justice Code (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty).
He told that Yadav was drunk at the time of the incident.
The officials are also investigating the role of other guards and an unidentified biker, the official said.
AIIMS Executive Director Professor Ajay Singh described the incident as “serious” and assured strict action against those responsible. Superintendent of Police (City) Abhinav Tyagi said that further investigation is underway.
