Date:

“This is a testament to a vibrant, strong and unique partnership between India and Mauritius,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday after inaugurating several developmental community projects in the island nation along with his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth.

The two leaders inaugurated the new airstrip, St. James Jetty and six community development projects at Agalega Island. A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said he inaugurated these projects through video conferencing.

Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi said, “This is the fifth meeting between us in the last 6 months. It is a testament to the vibrant, strong and unique partnership between India and Mauritius. Being members of the Global South, we have the same priorities.” ,

At the inauguration, PM Jugnauth thanked PM Modi and said that this is another great moment for the remarkable and exemplary partnership between Mauritius and India. He said that with digital payment connectivity, relations between India and Mauritius have entered a new dimension.

“Indeed we are making history today at Agalega Island, where the new airstrip, new jetty and many other development projects have been inaugurated. The event marks another great moment for the remarkable and exemplary partnership between Mauritius and India. I thank Narendra Modi for giving a completely new dimension to Mauritius-India relations and partnership…”

Earlier, the PMO in its release said, “The inauguration of these projects is a testament to the strong and decades-long development partnership between India and Mauritius. The projects will strengthen Agalega’s connectivity with mainland Mauritius and strengthen maritime security.”

“The projects will meet the demand for better connectivity between mainland Mauritius and Agalega, strengthen maritime security and promote socio-economic development,” a release from the PMO said.

According to the press release, this inauguration follows the recent launch of Unified Payment Interface (UPI) and RuPay card services in Mauritius on February 12 and hence is significant.

On the occasion of the launch, PM Modi had said that India’s UPI is taking on new responsibilities of connecting partners with India.

“Today is a special day for three friendly countries in the Indian Ocean region. Today we are connecting our historical relations in a modern digital way. This is a testament to our commitment towards the development of our people,” PM Modi said at a virtual ceremony to launch UPI services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius today.

“Through fintech connectivity, not only cross border transactions but also cross border connections will be strengthened,” he said. India’s Unified Payments Interface i.e. UPI is now playing a new responsibility – Uniting Partners with India.
