Zarafshan ShirazTearing of the perineum area located between the vagina and anus can occur during delivery which is known as a perineal or vaginal tear and these vaginal tears can be painful for women. In other words, the perineum – the area between the vagina and the anus – usually stretches effectively during childbirth, but it may experience tears, especially by women having a vaginal delivery for the first time.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Padma Srivastava, consultant obstetrician and gynecologist at Motherhood Hospitals in Lullanagar, Pune, said, “Perineal tears are classified into different degrees depending on their size and impact: first degree Degree tears are minor, superficial tears that occur most commonly. Get well on your own. Second degree tears are deeper and involve the perineal muscle, often requiring immediate repair with dissolving stitches after birth. Third-degree tears affect the anal sphincter muscles and require stitches. Fourth degree tears extend into the anal lining like third degree tears but also require stitches.
He shared, “The recovery period for a perineal tear varies depending on its severity, with more extensive tears requiring a longer recovery time. The wound may take at least 2-3 months to heal. It is essential to manage vaginal tears to provide relief, protect the area, and prevent infection. This is how to deal with vaginal tears at home.
She suggested the following important tips to deal with vaginal tears –
- Opt for hot compress: This will help in quick recovery. Even a warm compress on the perineum during labor can soften the tissues, making vaginal tears less likely to occur.
- Maintain good personal hygiene: Make sure to wash the vaginal area with warm water and avoid using products containing chemicals or washing hands there.
- Go for a cold compress: Using clean water or a cold pack will help reduce swelling and discomfort.
- dress appropriately: Always choose breathable fabrics like cotton and avoid wearing tight clothes like jeans, as these can aggravate vaginal sores and delay healing.
- Avoid rigorous exercise: Do not pull or put pressure on your private parts, this may increase the pain.
- Be cautious while sitting: Use a soft and comfortable mattress while sitting. If you are using any cream or ointment, do so only after consulting a specialist.
- Sitz baths may be helpful: If there is a wound, a salt water bath can help in quick healing. Salt kills the bacteria that build up in an open wound, allowing the area to dry out faster and speeding up the healing process. Try to keep the area clean and dry. Make sure not to rub the area too hard which could cause further problems.
- Don’t forget to take stool softeners: If you have tears in your vagina, defecating can be a difficult task. If you have to strain while defecating, it is better to take laxatives recommended by your doctor.
Vaginal tears can be a matter of concern for a large number of women, so it is essential to seek timely treatment. Therefore, be alert when vaginal tears occur.
