New Delhi. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reduced the waiting period for porting a mobile number after a SIM swap from 10 days to 7 days. This step has been taken amid increasing phone number frauds across the country. This rule will be implemented from July 1.
The regulator said in a press release, ‘Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on March 14, 2024 issued the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth Amendment) Regulations, 2024, which will come into effect from July 1, 2024.’

With the new regulation, TRAI has added an additional criterion for rejecting the allocation request of Unique Porting Code (UPC). The regulator said that if the request for UPC is made before the expiry of seven days from the date of SIM swap/placement, then UPC will not be allocated. TRAI said in its release that these amendments are aimed at curbing the porting of mobile numbers through fraudulent SIM swap/replacement by scammers.
Let us tell you that recently, the Telecommunication Act 2023 came into force. Apart from other changes, the new Telecom Act allows the government to take control of telecom operators in case of emergency.
Another big change that comes with the new telecom law is that it allows people to register a maximum of nine cards in their name. However, for those living in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeastern states, a person will be able to buy a maximum of six SIM cards as per this law.
