New Delhi : After a wait of 16 months, the draft digital personal data protection rules were finally released by the Central Government on Friday. After approval from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the government has now sought opinion from the public on this draft. Time has been given till 18 February 2025 to give opinion. The government will discuss it after receiving public opinion. There is also a rule in this draft regarding the presence of children on social media. According to this, children under 18 years of age will now need parental consent to open a social media account. Under the draft rules, emphasis has been laid on strict measures to protect the personal data of children and persons with disabilities.

Penalty for breaking rules
A fine of Rs 250 crore can be imposed on an organization that violates privacy rules. If any institution has broken the rules twice then it will have to pay a penalty of Rs 500 crore. Consumers will also have the right to refuse or challenge data collection practices or demands. Consumers can decide how much of their data is used and can also set a time limit for it. Consumers can also ask a company or organization to delete their data.

Whoever gives his opinion on this draft, his name will not be disclosed. This means that confidentiality will be taken full care of in this process.
