We don’t age slowly – we age faster between our mid-40s and early 60s. Here’s what you need to know.

If you’re thinking you woke up one day and suddenly felt like you were a lot older than you were a few days ago – you’re right. A recent study has shown that our bodies don’t just stop changing over time – in fact the ageing process speeds up dramatically in our 40s and 60s. The research was carried out by a team from Stanford Medicine who studied thousands of molecules and microbes in people aged between 25 and 75. It revolutionises the way we understand ageing and could help tackle age-related diseases.

For years and decades, scientists believed that aging is a slow and steady process that occurs gradually in the human body. However, this study has proven the truth that the aging process actually speeds up between the ages of 40 and 60. Although this may be shocking to many and lead to the idea of sudden aging, the study also helps us understand how this process occurs and how we can address it.

The rate of aging increases dramatically between the mid-40s and early 60s

In a university release, Michael Snyder, PhD, professor of genetics and senior author of the study, said that no matter the class of molecules studied, it has been observed that the pace of aging increases dramatically between the mid-40s and early 60s. This further changes the way our entire body works – from processing alcohol and caffeine to regulating the immune system and promoting heart health.

The study was conducted on 135,000 different molecules and microorganisms in 108 participants – results showed that 81% of these biological markers did not slow down progressive changes, but rather dramatically accelerated aging at specific times – primarily between the mid-40s and early 60s.

Increased risk of medical problems at certain ages

This discovery sheds light on how certain diseases increase at certain ages. This study is not just limited to women going through menopause. It also sheds light on how men’s bodies also age faster at these ages. This confirms that there are broader biological factors at play than just hormonal changes.
