New Delhi. Indian consumers who connect to piracy websites are at a higher risk of becoming victims of malware attacks, and this risk is even higher than that associated with adult sites and gambling advertisements. This claim has been made in a report. According to this study report released on Tuesday by ‘Indian School of Business’ (ISB), there is a higher risk of malware (59 percent) in accessing piracy sites compared to adult industry (57 percent) and gambling advertisements (53 percent). It happens more. The study is based on a survey conducted during May 23-29, 2023 among 1,037 respondents above 18 years of age in India.
According to the report, digital piracy poses a major risk to India’s cultural products across various entertainment sectors. Which people are at greater risk?
This study revealed the fact that distribution of malware that attacks users’ computers and mobiles has become an additional source of revenue for those running piracy sites in India. Especially among people aged 18-24 years, a greater tendency to access piracy websites has been seen. Along with this, the level of awareness regarding cyber risks among the youth is also very low.
What measures should be taken to avoid this?
“Use technology to detect and block these websites,” said Professor Manish Gangwar, executive director of the ISB Institute of Data Science and co-author of the study report. The study calls for the government to do more on digital copyright crimes and enforcement. It has also been recommended to give priority and take strict action against the biggest piracy gangs.
