The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed a three-level grievance redressal system to solve the concerns of the students. Additionally, students have been started an online portal to directly register their complaints.

Every year, thousands of students face difficulties. According to a report, medical colleges across the country receive more than 5,000 complaints annually. Primary issues include ragging, mental harassment, delayed stipend and excessive duty collection. UGC’s 2023 report states that ragging of more than 700 cases from medical colleges alone was reported. Many students hesitate to file a complaint due to fear or lack of action, increase problems, sometimes leading to serious consequences such as leaving, mental stress and even suicide.

Common issues include:

– Charging excessive fees

-Non-paying of Deri or stipend

– Ragging or mental harassment

– Unnecessary obstacles for internship

– Faculty or employee miscreation

– Problems related to course, appearance, examination and evaluation

How will you find solutions now?

Complaints will be resolved at three levels:

1. Medical college/institute level

2. Relevant university level

3. State DME or Health and Medical Education Department Department

If issues remain unresolved at these levels, students can directly register their complaints on the online portal of NMC.

A Grievance Redressal Committee, which includes senior officials, will be established in every medical college, university and foreign department. Institutions should provide complete information about an online complaint link on this committee and their websites. A record of every complaint will be maintained, when it was obtained, what action was taken, and resolution time.

How to complain online?

– If your complaint is unresolved at the college or university level, then visit the NMC portal.

– First, register on the portal.

– Fill the details of your complaint.

– NMC team will then take necessary action.

Students should note that they should first make complaints at the level where the problem started. Complaints will be resolved quickly and transparently at every level. Colleges and universities should clearly showcase the entire process and committee information on their websites.
