New study urges parents to authenticate their children’s pain. Negative reactions will cause them to suppress their pain until it gets worse and becomes chronic.
Children are sometimes considered sensitive when they express pain, whether it’s grunting out of fear of an injection or taking out their anger by slipping on the floor. Parents may be quick to dismiss their feelings, finding their reactions silly, humorous, or exaggerated. A study from the University of South Australia reveals the importance of validating manifestations of all types of pain – minor or major. This can significantly affect the child’s future interactions with emotions and pain management. By acknowledging a child’s pain, parents and caregivers can help them develop healthy coping mechanisms.

By actively listening and comforting the child, they feel heard and comfortable. It builds positive relationships with parents and medical caregivers. Children can be shy, so it is important to create a safe environment where they can open up. Researchers revealed that pain and emotions are linked. Expression of pain reflects insecurity, and by accepting this, the child develops a healthy approach to emotional expression and regulation. This reinforces healthy pain management behaviors and they are more likely to seek medical help when needed.
Long Term Effects of Negative Pain Management
When a child’s expression of pain is heard and acknowledged, they come to understand that their pain is real and valid. However, if the feedback is negative, they may stop expressing themselves and endure the pain. Soon it becomes chronic, affecting their quality of life. Trust is broken, leading to a lack of initiative to seek medical help when needed. This may worsen the health condition. This dysfunctional pain management may also be reflected in adulthood.
