NEET Exam Controversy: many National Eligibility Criteria According to a PTI report, candidates have alleged that the marks were inflated, resulting in a record 67 candidates securing top ranks, six of whom were from the same exam centre.
National Testing Agency (NTA) has denied the allegations of irregularities. He attributed the high marks to changes in NCERT textbooks and grace marks given for wasting time at the exam centres.
On the evening of June 5, the NTA announced the NEET results, showing that 67 students had secured top positions, including six from a single exam centre in Haryana.

Experts suggest the inflated marks could make it more challenging to get a place in a medical school this year. Advocate Anubha Shrivastava, president of the India Wide Parents Association, told PTI that they support the demand for an inquiry. “Many students are raising some valid issues. How did students with the same sequence roll number get the same marks? MarkSrivastava said, “This is a serious issue. We do not want such doctors to serve our country. This should be investigated.”

- The NEET exam was held on May 5 at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 international locations. According to data from the National Testing Agency (NTA), 23,33,297 candidates appeared for the NEET 2024 exam.
- On the day of the exam, the NTA reported wrong question papers being distributed at a centre in Rajasthan, which led to some candidates walking out with the question papers. However, the NTA denied any question paper leak and reiterated that such claims are baseless and all question papers have been accounted for.
- Some students have taken to online platforms and demanded cancellation of the results and re-examination. They have demanded a high-level inquiry, while many students have demanded re-examination and intervention of the Supreme Court.

- NTA said that they had received complaints about wastage of time during the exam. To address this, NTA implemented a normalization formula, which was approved by the commission. Supreme Court This included compensating candidates for lost time by giving them grace marks, which could potentially lead to their marks being 718 or 719.
- A senior NTA official said that some students had old NCERT textbooks while the exam was based on new textbooks. As a result, all students who chose one of the two options were given five marks, increasing the marks of some students from 715 to 720 and creating more top scorers.
- A vacation bench of Justice DK Sharma of the Delhi High Court has asked the NTA to respond to a plea by a NEET-UG aspirant alleging that the answer key had two correct answers for a question. The matter is scheduled to be heard next week.

- The petitioner, a 17-year-old candidate, claims that equal marks should be awarded to those who did not attempt the question as was awarded to those who answered either of the two correct options. The petitioner scored 633 out of 720 marks, securing an overall percentage of around 98 and an all-India rank of close to 44,700. The petition argues that the principle of fairness in competitive examinations demands equal assessment for all candidates. It alleges that awarding marks for two correct options when the instructions stated only one correct answer compromised fairness.
- Congress The party raised concerns on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) and questioned the credibility of the NEET results. They highlighted the issue of six students from the same centre scoring 720 out of 720 marks and mentioned other alleged irregularities related to the NEET exam. They accused the government of failing to conduct the exam without any problems and claimed that it has put the future of many youth at risk.

He asked, “Why is the government ignoring the voice of lakhs of students? Students want answers to legitimate questions related to rigging in the NEET exam results. - Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said in a post in Hindi on X on June 7 that the Modi government is directly responsible for the matter. He wrote, “Paper leaks, rigging and corruption have become an integral part of many examinations including NEET. The Modi government is directly responsible for this… We demand a high-level investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court so that our talented students who appeared in NEET and other examinations can get justice.”
- Congress general secretary and communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh also posted on X on the issue. In a lengthy Hindi post on the platform on June 7, Ramesh sought clarifications from the government on various alleged anomalies raised in the NEET exam. He alleged that this year’s NEET paper was leaked and the issue was hushed up. He raised several questions that must be answered and demanded a “fair and transparent probe” to “restore students’ faith in the exam”.
