The study reiterated that every activity, from taking a short walk to doing household chores, can improve cognitive processing speed.
Exercise is good for health. It helps boost metabolism, strengthen muscles and improve physical functions. But, did you know that exercise and simple activities can help increase brain function? A recent study led by Jonathan Hakun, Penn State, sheds light on this.
Studies have shown that doing simple activities like walking the dog or doing simple household chores can improve the brain’s cognitive processing speed. Cognitive processing speed refers to the speed at which the brain receives and processes information.

Study findings:
The study was conducted on 200 middle-aged adults between the ages of 40 and 65, half of whom were black or African American and 34% were Hispanic. Participants checked their physical activity in a smartphone app and participated in several brain games. It was observed that when participants engaged in simple physical routines, their cognitive processing speed increased by the age of four.
Lead study author Jonathan Hakun, assistant professor of neurology and psychology at Penn State, explained in a university release that we don’t need to go to the gym to get all the benefits of activity. Sometimes doing very simple physical activities can contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Even short-term activities can increase brain function. Jonathan Hakun further said that with age our physical and cognitive abilities begin to decline. This can be countered through movement.
Mobility and Memory:
While physical activity showed a positive effect on the brain’s cognitive processing speed, it had no effect on working memory – the way the brain stores information. This suggests that physical activity has more immediate effects on the brain than long-term cognitive skills.
The study also shows that every activity matters. From taking a short walk to doing household chores, every physical activity can boost the brain.
