NASA shares tips for sky observation, know what adventurers should ‘keep an eye on’

Date:

Space is an unknown place, and every month, the positions of natural satellites, planets and other space objects keep changing as they move from one place to another. Skywatchers are excited to observe the midnight sky with their telescopes.

This is the latest in a series of sky-watching tips from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), where its Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has shared a video explaining the position of the Moon, Ptolemy Cluster, Butterfly Cluster and other planets in space.

According to the video, M7, also called Ptolemy’s Cluster, and M6, also called the Butterfly Cluster, both lie about 5 degrees east of the bright stars that mark the ‘sting’ end of the scorpion’s tail. These two easily recognizable star clusters reach their highest point in the sky around 10 or 11 p.m. local time, JPL said.

For celestial adventures, JPL reported that the crescent Moon will join Jupiter and Mars in the east before sunrise on July 2 and 3, followed by a new moon on July 5.

On July 7 and 8, sky watchers will be able to spot the planet Mercury and a thin crescent moon shining low in the sky about 30 to 45 minutes after the sun sets.

On July 13, the moon will appear to pass in front of the bright blue-white star Spica — an event called an occultation — which will be visible across much of the US and much of Mexico.

Those wanting to get a closer look at the distant planet Uranus can take binoculars and view Mars in the early morning before the sky brightens.

Again, on July 15, adventurers in the sky will be able to catch a glimpse of the full Moon, and on July 30, adventurers in space will be able to see the full Moon up close.

Jupiter, Mars and the Moon gather in the morning sky before dawn, and the bright stars of the Taurus constellation are visible.
