The National Space Aeronautics and Space Administration recently shared a spectacular picture from the universe, which shows what can be called the aftermath of a mega merger between two galaxies. In the picture shared by the US space agency on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), people can enjoy a spectacular view of NGC 2005, a globular cluster that is believed to have come into existence due to a merger between two galaxies.

About NGC 2005
NGC 2005 is a globular cluster located in the universe. According to the theories put forward by most scientists, such globular clusters develop through the merger of galaxies.

NGC 2005 can be seen about 750 light-years from the heart of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the Milky Way’s largest satellite galaxy, about 162,000 light-years from Earth.
What are globular clusters?
Globular clusters are densely packed groups of stars that can contain thousands or even millions of stars. Their density is proof that they are stable. It is also proof of their longevity.

Globular clusters can be billions of years old, and often consist of very old stars. Studying globular clusters in space can be similar to studying fossils on Earth: while fossils reveal features of ancient plants and animals, globular clusters reveal features of ancient stars.

NGC 2005 can be considered an ancient witness to a long-gone merger between two galaxies. To support this theory, NASA highlights the fact that the chemical composition of the stars in NGC 2005 is different from the stars surrounding it in the LMC. This difference suggests that the LMC underwent a merger with another galaxy long ago. NASA’s image was captured by its Hubble Space Telescope.
