If you are a traveler interested in history and stunning landscapes, India’s North-East should be on your list. For example, Assam is making waves globally – ranked fourth on the New York Times list 52 places to visit in 2025The state is celebrated for its vibrant heritage, rich natural beauty and warm hospitality. But beyond its lush tea plantations and serene hills, the state is filled with monuments that tell stories of ancient civilizations, lost kingdoms and timeless traditions. Here’s a little glimpse at three historical sites that should be on your radar, especially if you want to explore places that still retain an atmosphere of mystery and magic.
Maha Mrityunjay Temple – The World’s Largest Shivling
Imagine standing in front of the 126-foot-tall giant Shivalinga, a sight so immense that it humbles even the most experienced travelers. Maha Mrityunjay Temple, located in Ververi Gossaingaon, Nagaon, is a relatively new gem in Assam, but it is already in the news for being home to the world’s largest Shivalinga. Built in 2021, this awe-inspiring temple attracts devotees and travelers alike with its grandeur and architectural beauty. As you approach the huge Shivalinga, you will be struck not only by its sheer size but also by the peace that has engulfed the temple grounds – truly a place of reflection and reverence.
Umananda Island – A Piece of Peace in the Mighty Brahmaputra
Now, if you want something a little more whimsical, Umananda Island is a must visit. Although it may not technically be a monument, this quaint village island on the Brahmaputra River feels like stepping into another world. A short boat trip (or if you prefer, a thrilling Skyrail ride) brings you to this peaceful spot. The island’s charm lies in its simplicity – a glimpse of life that hasn’t changed much over the past few decades. The main attraction here is the Umanand Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. With its serene, beautiful surroundings and its deep historical and spiritual significance, Umananda Island offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Charaideo – Shining city on a hill
If you are a history lover, Charaideo is your dream destination. Charaideo, the first permanent capital of the Ahom kingdom, established by King Chao Lung Siu-ka-fa, holds an important place in the history of the region. The name ‘Charaideo’ itself speaks to the mystery of this land – it is made up of three Tai Ahom words: ‘che’ (city), ‘rai’ (shine), and ‘doi’ (hill), which together mean “A shining city situated on.” Known for its ancient cemeteries, Charaideo is home to the Maidams, large earthen mounds that served as the tombs of Ahom kings and queens. Often compared to the pyramids of Egypt, these madams offer a glimpse of Assam’s glorious past. The intricate architecture and knowledge passed down from generations of masons and artisans makes these cemeteries one of the most astonishing archaeological wonders of the region. It was also recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2024.
