In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Manish Sharma, Senior Medical Oncologist at Fortis Hospital, Noida and Medical Oncologist at Cancer Care Clinic, Faridabad, explores the unique hurdles faced by cancer patients during monsoon and offers practical tips to sail through these monsoon months –

the risk of infection increases

The monsoon season is notorious for a surge in infections. From respiratory illnesses to waterborne diseases, damp and humid conditions create a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. For cancer patients, whose immune systems are often weakened due to treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, this increased risk can be particularly worrisome. It is important for patients to take extra precautions, such as avoiding crowded places, ensuring proper hand hygiene, and drinking only purified water.

Access to healthcare

Heavy rain and flooding can disrupt transportation, making it difficult for patients to reach the hospital for their scheduled treatments and checkups. Road closures and traffic jams are common, potentially delaying critical medical care. Patients and their families are advised to plan their travel carefully, taking into account weather forecasts and allowing extra time for travel to medical facilities. In cases of inclement weather, telemedicine consultations can provide a valuable option, ensuring continued medical assistance without the need for travel.

Maintaining nutrition and exercise

Monsoons can also affect dietary habits and physical activity, which are very important for cancer patients. The availability of fresh produce may be limited, and the temptation to indulge in fried and spicy monsoon delicacies may upset a balanced diet. It is important to prefer nutritious, home-cooked food and stay hydrated with clean, boiled water. Exercise routines may need to be adjusted with indoor activities like yoga or light aerobics to maintain physical health and boost immunity.

Mental health considerations

The gloomy season can take a toll on mental health, increasing the feelings of anxiety and depression that many cancer patients already face. Pursuing hobbies, staying connected with loved ones virtually, and practising mindfulness techniques can help combat monsoon blues.

Although the monsoon season brings with it many challenges, with careful planning and precaution, cancer patients can stay safe during these months. By being vigilant about hygiene, ensuring access to medical care, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and paying attention to mental health, they can continue their fight against cancer even amidst the rains.
