A woman in Indonesia died after being swallowed by a five-metre-long python, AFP reported on Saturday. According to news reports, the woman’s body was found in the python’s stomach after she went missing for more than 12 hours.
45-year-old Farida was a resident of Kelampang village in South Sulawesi province. The mother of four children went missing on Thursday night and did not return home. Worried about his wife, Farida’s husband and other family members started looking for her. Later, the husband found his wife’s belongings near the village. The villagers’ suspicion grew further when they found a python with an unusually large belly. Later, they decided to cut open the belly of the giant snake and found Farida’s body.
The mother of four went missing on Thursday night and did not return home, following which a search was launched for her, village head Suardi Rossi told AFP.

Suardi said her husband “found her belongings…which made him suspicious. The villagers then searched the area. They soon spotted a python with a big belly.”
“They agreed to cut open the python’s belly. As soon as they did so, Farida’s head immediately became visible,” AFP quoted Suardi as saying.
The deceased woman’s husband regretted not being able to save his wife from the snake. According to Fox News, ViralPress quoted Fareeda’s husband Noni as saying, “If I had been with her that day, the snake would not have dared to touch her.”
Rare incidents of pythons swallowing humans whole are on the rise in Indonesia
Such incidents of a python swallowing an adult are very unusual and rare, however, there has been a rise in adult deaths due to this reason in the country in the past few years, reports AFP.
In 2023, residents of the Tinanggia district in Southeast Sulawesi killed a giant snake after they found it strangling and eating a villager. A similar incident occurred in the country in 2018, when a 54-year-old woman was killed and swallowed by a seven-meter-long giant python in Muna city in Southeast Sulawesi. There have been several incidents of villagers going missing who were later found to have been swallowed by pythons.
