Matt in Superman: Flyby
Matt was shooting the soap opera Guiding Light when the producers rejected his role because they had the chance to play a major superhero. “It’s a very early version of Superman written by JJ Abrams, called Superman: Flyby, I think that’s what it was called, and it never came to light. It seemed like I was the director’s choice for the role. I did a three-picture deal with Warner Bros.”
When asked if his sexual orientation influenced casting, he said it was his “understanding” and added, “It was a time in the industry when something like that could be used as a weapon against you. How, why and who, I don’t know, but yes, that’s my understanding.” To date, no Superman: Flyby film has been made.
Matt did not publicly admit to being gay until 2012. While accepting the Steve Chase Humanitarian Award that year, he thanked his husband, Simon Halls, and their three children.
Superman Franchise
In 2006, filmmaker Bryan Singer released the next installment of the Superman franchise, Superman Returns, with Brandon Routh. The film focuses on Superman as he returns to Earth after a five-year absence, discovering that his girlfriend, Lois Lane, has moved on with her life and that his archenemy, Lex Luthor, is plotting to kill him. Backed by Warner Bros., the film received mixed reviews.
James Gunn’s Superman reboot is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025, with David Corenswet in the lead role. The film was previously titled Superman: Legacy. Henry Cavill was initially expected to reprise the role of Superman, but plans were scrapped due to difficulties in the production of Justice League.
