About the Maharaja
On Wednesday, Netflix India and YRF Entertainment announced the synopsis and release date of Maharaj, along with the first poster featuring Junaid and Jaideep. While Junaid is seen sporting long hair, moustache, white shirt and brown waistcoat, Jaideep looks like a Hindu priest with a ponytail and a long tilak on his forehead. The caption on Netflix India’s official Instagram handle read, “The fight for the truth between a powerful man and a fearless journalist. Based on true events – Maharaj releasing June 14, only on Netflix!”
As per the synopsis shared by the streaming giant, “The year is 1862, a time when India had only three universities, Rabindranath Tagore has turned a year older and the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 is fanning the flames of freedom. Against all odds, one man takes a bold step in a landmark legal battle, a true story that now comes to light in Maharaj – over 160 years later.”
“Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer, was a leading advocate for women’s rights and social reform. A student of Mumbai’s Elphinstone College and a disciple of the scholar-leader Dadabhai Naoroji, he wrote on widow remarriage, stood up for the oppressed and sowed seeds of reform in society. All of this culminated in the Maharajah Defamation Case of 1862, sparked by allegations of misconduct by a prominent man, the case attracted widespread attention and scrutiny, setting the stage for what many consider one of the most important legal battles of all time,” it added.
Maharaj also has a special appearance by Sharwari Wagh.
