Kourtney Kardashian introduces supplements like Ozempic over the counter; find out why it might be a bad idea

Date:

Kourtney Kardashian Barker recently expanded her wellness brand Lemme with the launch of a new plant-based supplement called GLP-1 Daily, designed as a natural alternative to medications like the infamous Ozempic. The launch is made in response to the growing conversation about GLP-1 medications, which have gained popularity for their role in weight management and diabetes treatment. Unlike prescription medications like Ozempic, GLP-1 Daily capsules are available over the counter because they are made from plant extracts. The formula is centered around three key plant ingredients: Eriomin lemon fruit extract, Suppressa saffron extract, and Morosil red-orange fruit extract.

Kourtney Kardashian is expanding her wellness empire with a new product as an alternative to GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic

Kardashian was initially surprised by the demand for the product. “If you would have told me when we launched the brand that this would be a product we would be making, I wouldn’t have believed you,” she told Vogue. “But GLP-1 medications have been helpful for a lot of people. There are a lot of benefits to this medication, but there are a lot of side effects as well.”

She explains that her team was inspired by the number of people seeking alternatives to GLP-1 drugs, many of whom experienced unpleasant side effects from the synthetic drug; nausea and digestive problems were quite common among users. This response prompted her and her medical advisory team to search for alternatives that could provide the same benefits but in a more natural, side-effect-free form.

We spoke to Delhi-based Consultant Dietitian Kanika Malhotra about the efficacy and risks of this supplement. “Eriomin is a flavonoid found in lemons and other citrus fruits. It has been studied for its potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Saffron contains compounds such as crocin and safranal, which have been associated with potential mood-boosting as well as antioxidant effects. It is generally considered safe when taken in recommended doses. Additionally, Morosil is a citrus fruit extract that is rich in polyphenols, particularly hesperidin. It has been studied for its potential to reduce body fat and improve metabolic health.

Now while the individual ingredients in GLP-1 Daily – eriomin, saffron, and morosil – are generally recognized as safe when taken as directed, it is important to remember that individual responses to supplements can vary. Despite some initial research, more rigorous clinical studies are needed to fully understand their long-term benefits and potential risks. Therefore, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplements.”

Understanding Ozempic

Approved by the FDA in 2017, Ozempic is primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes, helping to manage blood sugar levels and reduce cardiovascular risks in patients with diabetes and heart disease. This medication helps control blood sugar by increasing insulin production after meals, slowing digestion, and reducing the amount of sugar released into the bloodstream. Although not officially approved for weight loss, Ozempic has gained a reputation for helping people lose weight by reducing appetite and making users feel fuller longer. In some cases, it is prescribed off-label for weight management.

While the new supplement may attempt to emulate the properties of the synthetic drug through a safer, more vegan formula, there is little evidence that it will work in the same way. “It is unlikely that the plant-based compounds in GLP-1 Daily will have the same effects as the synthetic version of Ozempic. Ozempic works primarily by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which is made naturally in the body. This hormone helps control blood sugar levels and appetite. Plant-based compounds may have some of the same effects, but their mechanism of action may be different. Ozempic has also undergone rigorous clinical trials to demonstrate its effectiveness for weight loss and diabetes management. There is perhaps less clinical evidence to support the claims made about GLP-1 Daily, especially with regard to its efficacy for weight loss. It is important to note that while plant-based supplements may be beneficial for overall health, they may not be as effective as prescription medications like Ozempic for specific conditions,” Kanika said.

Controversy surrounding Ozempic

Ozempic has made waves in the film and fashion industry for its ability to help with weight loss, but its growing use among celebrities and influencers has raised huge concerns. As demand for its off-label use skyrockets, shortages are affecting those who need it for diabetes management. In addition, Ozempic has a number of potential side effects, including more serious health risks like nausea, fatigue, and thyroid problems.

Many people who stop taking the drug regain the lost weight almost immediately, highlighting the short-term nature of its effects. This trend also coincides with the return of Y2K fashion styles that emphasize thin figures, leading to a renewed focus on unrealistic body ideals. As a result, some worry that society is once again prioritizing thinness as the ultimate beauty standard and promoting an unhealthy relationship with food despite years of progress toward body positivity and inclusivity.

Recently, Kate Moss’ sister Lottie admitted that she had to be hospitalized due to an Ozempic overdose. “I had a friend, and she was able to get it for me,” she explained during one of her episodes. Dream with Lottie Moss podcast. Lotti explained that she took supplements that were meant for someone who weighed much more than her, which caused her to suffer severe side effects, including persistent nausea and rapid, unhealthy weight loss.

In just a few weeks, she lost nearly 20 pounds, and her weight became dangerously low. The effects of the drug became so intense that she claimed she couldn’t digest food or water, which led to her going to the hospital and having a seizure due to dehydration. Lottie now warns others against using Ozempic, stressing its risks and negative impact on one’s health.

“An overdose of Ozempic can have serious consequences. Although it is uncommon, taking more than the prescribed dose can cause severe nausea and vomiting, rapid heart rate, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), pancreatitis, and kidney problems. Therefore, it is important to strictly follow the instructions given by your healthcare provider. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical help immediately. Ozempic is a prescription drug and should only be used under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional,” Kanika added

Overdosing on plant-based supplements like GLP-1 Daily Gummy is a possibility. While the risk may be lower than with prescription medications, excessive intake may cause adverse reactions like gastrointestinal distress or allergic reactions. In such a case, it is important to follow the recommended dosage and consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplements.

The rise of supplements reflects a broader cultural obsession with achieving a specific body image. “For me, this product was never just about weight loss. We formulated GLP-1 Daily because it allows you to control your glucose levels, fight visceral fat, and reduce inflammation. It also has health benefits beyond weight loss,” Courtney says. Still, the effects of these naturally occurring extracts are considered quite mild and not effective enough to treat people who are struggling with serious health problems such as obesity. Therefore, it is imperative that the focus of such supplements remains on sustainable health practices, not on chasing fleeting trends that often come at a high physical and emotional cost.
