King Charles III set to return to public duties amid cancer treatment

Date:

Buckingham Palace confirmed on Friday that King Charles III is set to re-emerge into the public sphere by resuming his official duties next week after a nearly three-month hiatus. The monarch took a step back from public appearances to focus on treatment for an unspecified form of cancer.

This confirmation was shared by the official account of Buckingham Palace on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter). The update also noted that King Charles III is scheduled to pay a public visit to a cancer treatment center next Tuesday, marking the beginning of a series of planned appearances in the coming weeks.

Among King Charles’s first significant commitments, the monarch is set to host a state visit by the Emperor and Empress of Japan in June, underscoring a return to full commitment to his official duties.

Notably, the palace did not provide any update on King Charles’ cancer diagnosis or his treatment. The statement only said that “the medical team is very encouraged by the progress made so far and remains positive about King’s continued recovery”.

Buckingham Palace announced the cancer diagnosis in early February this year—just days after the king underwent planned treatment to treat an enlarged prostate. Charles was seen for the first time since his cancer diagnosis on 6 February when he accompanied Queen Camilla by helicopter to the Sandringham estate. Charles was seen greeting well-wishers in Windsor after attending an Easter church service in late March, his first appearance at a public royal event since his diagnosis was announced.

King Charles continued his state duties, including reviewing government documents and meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, after his diagnosis was revealed on 5 February.

Charles’s return will ease pressure on other members of the royal family as the king’s absence, as well as that of the Princess of Wales due to illness, highlights the challenges facing the weakened monarchy.

Between the king’s commitment to cutting costs and the decision of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – commonly known as Prince Harry and Meghan – to step away from royal duties, there have been endless rounds of ribbon cuttings to complete. With very few members of the family available, the awards ceremonies and state engagements that make up modern royal life are rare.
