Jimny Vs Thar: Even after discount on Jimny, Thar is heavier! What is making Mahindra’s car special?

New Delhi. In the Indian market, car customers are preferring compact SUVs. At the same time, there is competition among the vehicles in the off-road SUV segment also. Although Maruti Suzuki sells the maximum number of cars in the country, but there are many car segments in which the company’s cars are not performing well. One such car segment is of off-road cars in which Maruti’s new Jimny SUV seems to be lagging behind badly.

Maruti Jimny was launched in June 2023 as a 5-door off-roader SUV. The company had launched it to compete with powerful cars like Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. Let us tell you that in the budget off-roader segment, Maruti Jimny is the only car which has 5 doors, whereas Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha have the option of only two passenger seat doors. Even in terms of features, Jimny comes with more practical features in its segment. The company also gave offers of up to Rs 1.5 lakh to increase its sales, but still its sales did not increase.

This car did wonders!
Mahindra Thar’s dominance in the off-road car segment has increased rapidly in the last few years. There is a waiting period of 12 to 13 months on many variants of Thar. Mahindra Thar has remained the number-1 off-roader SUV ever since its launch in the new generation design in the year 2020. In the month of January (2024), the company recorded the highest ever sales of Thar which was 6,059 units. On the other hand, Maruti Jimny’s lowest ever sales were recorded with 163 units. Jimny 730 units were sold in December 2023.

If we look at the sales of the last 8 months, from June 2023 to January 2024, a total of more than 43,000 units of Mahindra Thar have been sold, whereas only 16,369 units of Jimny have been sold. According to January sales, Maruti Jimny is the least selling car of the company.

Thar became people’s favorite
According to some media reports, people are not liking the look and design of Maruti Jimny, whereas Mahindra Thar gives much better visual appeal than Jimny. Its road presence is also much better than Jimny. At the same time, it is also bigger in size than Jimny. Mahindra Thar is also benefiting from the fan following developed by the older models.

The new generation model of Thar was launched in 2020.

Mahindra Thar is available in two engine options which include 2-litre turbo petrol engine (152PS/320Nm) and 1.5-litre diesel engine (118PS/300Nm). 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT gearbox options are available with both engines. The Thar 1.5-litre diesel engine comes only with rear wheel drive, while the 2.2-litre diesel version gets a 4-wheel drive option. Thar’s 2.0-litre petrol engine has both rear wheel drive and 4-wheel drive options. Both the engines of Thar generate more power than Jimny. Because of this, Thar gets good performance and ride quality.

How are the features of Thar?
Mahindra Thar comes with many features like 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, halogen headlights with LED DRLs, electrically controlled AC and steering mounted controls. Thar convertible also comes with seven rooftop options. In terms of safety, Thar has features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, hill descent control, traction control, rear parking sensor and front seat belt reminder.
