The Jharkhand High Court Advocates Association is protesting against hiring lawyers outside the state as judges in the High Court, boycotting the courts of Chief Justice Ms. Ramchandra Rao, Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Rongon Mukhopadhyay. The three judges are part of the collegium who recommend judges for height.

The Advocates Association, which is protesting against the appointment of judges, said the collegium had taken a proposal against any such appointments, but agreed to appoint at least two Supreme Court lawyers as judges.

Quoted by Bar and benchA letter from the association states: “As you know, our association has constantly stated that the appointment of judges in the Jharkhand High Court should consider eligible and experienced regular doctors/ advocates from within our bar, who have intimate knowledge of local laws, customs and socio-economic realities from within our bar.”

“This situation is not only a matter of regional priority, but our commitment stems to ensure effective administration of justice that is sensitive to the unique needs and challenges of our state,” it reads.
