President Draupadi Murmu on Thursday appointed Mazhar Asif as Vice Chancellor. Jamia Millia Islamiaaccording to Union Ministry of Education officers.
Asif is currently a professor Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) School of Languages.
“The President, in his capacity as Visitor to Jamia Millia Islamia, appoints Professor Mazhar Asif, School of Languages, JNU, as Vice-Chancellor of Jamia for five years from the date he enters upon his office or until he assumes office Is.” The age of 70 years, whichever is earlier, said a ministry official.
JNU alumnus Asif was a member of the new drafting committee National Education Policy, 2020,
The post of Jamia Vice-Chancellor fell vacant in November 2023 when the tenure of previous VC Najma Akhtar ended.
Asif has served as a member of the executive councils of both JNU and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad National Urdu University.
He has also played leadership roles in national education initiatives such as National Institute of Open Schooling and National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language.
Asif has nine books published in Persian, English and Assamese, including a comprehensive Persian-Assamese-English dictionary.
He has presented more than 20 research papers in national and international conferences, reflecting his active participation in academic discourse.
