Causes of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease:

“The lower esophageal sphincter, which is the muscle that separates the esophagus and stomach, relaxes inappropriately, allowing acid to flow back up. Acid reflux can affect affected people at any time of the day. On the other hand, nocturnal GERD refers to conditions in which acid reflux may worsen while the patient sleeps,” explains Dr. Lohit Yu. Effect of GERD on night time sleep:

“Frequent awakenings and poor quality of sleep are caused by acid reflux, which causes discomfort such as heartburn, coughing attacks, choking or bad taste in the mouth. Insufficient sleep can ultimately result in daily tiredness, nervousness, impaired concentration and decreased metabolic processes of the body. ‘It can cause esophagitis (inflammation of the oesophagus), ulcers and, in some cases, narrowing (stricture) of the oesophagus, respiratory problems or a precancerous condition called Barrett’s oesophagus.’ Dr. Lohit Yu said. Tips to Manage Acid Reflux at Night:

Dr. Lohit Yu shares some preventive tips to manage acid reflux at night and improve sleep patterns:

  • Elevating the head of the bed six to eight inches.
  • The early dinner was moderately divided.
  • Avoid fatty or spicy foods right before bed.
  • Take a nap on your left side.
  • Control your weight to avoid abdominal pressure.
  • Medical treatment with antacids or acid-reducing medications provided by a healthcare provider.
