“For doctors, spotting patterns could mean faster, life-saving treatment in an emergency,” lead author Roy Khalaf, a fourth-year medical student in McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, said in a media release. For allergy sufferers, understanding the role of alcohol and other triggers can help them choose safer alternatives. With the abundance of nut-based dishes and specialty beverages during the holiday season, the risk of accidental allergy exposure requires careful attention.

Study findings:

The study, published in the International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, looked at 1,100 emergency cases across Canada over a decade. This was done to understand the main triggers of allergic reactions and how they appear. While for a long time, medications were considered the main trigger for allergic reactions, recent studies have focused on how alcohol consumption can have serious effects.

The study was conducted on adults of different age groups with an average age of 35.5 years, in which the most common allergy triggers were food triggers such as peanuts (13.5%), shellfish (10.2%), and tree nuts (8.7%). It was observed that medicines are also responsible for causing allergies with antibiotics being the most common trigger. The study also looked at how allergic reactions are treated medically. For people with peanut allergies, emergency epinephrine auto-injectors (such as EpiPens) are available for use outside the hospital, reflecting awareness of peanut allergies becoming more prevalent. However, for people with tree nut allergy reactions, epinephrine is only available in a hospital setting. Read this also 7 health benefits of eating peanuts in winter season
