A health expert reveals the shocking impact of poor AQI on children’s health and what parents can do about it.
Like adults, poor air quality can impact a child’s overall health. The shocking thing is that children will experience various health problems such as respiratory problems like cough, sneezing, chest congestion, eye allergies, anxiety and stress.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Amit Gupta, senior neonatologist and pediatrician, Motherhood Hospitals, Noida, shared, “The worrying reality of poor air quality index (AQI) levels is a hidden problem affecting children’s health. It represents a crisis that will have long-term consequences. Like adults, children are also sensitive to air pollution which can adversely affect their overall health. Since a child’s respiratory system is still developing, exposure to toxic pollutants can have not only immediate effects such as asthma attacks, but also subtle cognitive decline.

What effect does poor air quality have on children’s health?
- Respiratory problems: A large number of children exposed to air pollution will experience a number of health problems such as runny nose, chest congestion, cough, wheezing, cold, breathlessness, asthma, pneumonia and bronchitis flare-ups. Long-term exposure to air pollution can cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in children.
- Eye allergies: Due to poor air quality, children may complain of swelling, pain, redness, swelling and watering of the eyes.
- cognitive decline: Air pollution is known to impact the growth and development of children. It can affect the academic performance of the child and cause behavioral problems like agitation, confusion, aggression, irritation, anxiety, stress and depression, reduced memory span and attention. Parents should ensure that their child remains healthy and strong.

Follow these important strategies for child’s well-being
- Encourage children to plant more trees: Parents should understand the importance of planting trees to combat environmental pollution. It is better to educate children about planting trees for oxygen and fresh air, which will improve breathing.
- stay indoors: Children should stay indoors when the air quality outside is bad. Avoid going to playgrounds, instead opt for activities like painting, puzzle-solving, drawing or playing games at home.
- Use Mask: If children must go out, they should use masks. By doing this they can protect themselves from air pollution.
- Choose an air purifier at home: Improve indoor air quality and avoid smoking or burning incense sticks. Keep the house clean and dust-free. Parents must ensure the safety of their child. Be alert!
