Vishwajit Singh/Mumbai: Sanjay Gandhi National Park is one of the major tourist places and national parks of Maharashtra. This park is an ideal place for picnics and weekends. In this single place, you will get the pleasure of visiting ponds, forests and mountains. This place is not only famous for visiting, in fact, this place is related to history. Kanheri caves are present here. This park covers an area of 104 square kilometers.
There are 2 thousand year old caves in the park
The Kanheri caves have a total of 100 nine caves. Some of these contain Buddhist sculptures and relief carvings, paintings and inscriptions dating from the 1st century BC to the 10th century AD. There is also an inscription of the 9th or 10th century on the walls of some of the caves here.
At this place you will also get to see stairs made by cutting the mountain which shows the craftsmanship of that time. Cave number 1 is actually a Vihar, which is a Buddhist monastery. This cave has two floors, but its construction was never completed.
The park is home to many animals
This park is known for its evergreen dense forests, bird population, butterflies and small population of tigers. Leopards, macaques, boars, lions, flying foxes, kingfishers, birds and various species of butterflies can be seen during a visit to Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Apart from this, the 2000 years old Kanheri caves located inside the park are also a center of attraction.
