Is hair identifier spray necessary? experts say no

Date:

A viral hair identifier spray is all over social media, claiming to expose invisible facial hair. Users spray the product on their face, causing a white cloud to expose previously unseen hairs. The idea is to make these hairs easier to identify and remove, resulting in a smoother, more flawless complexion.

While this concept may sound exciting, dermatologists caution against the potential negative consequences of using such a product. Dr Bhavuk Dhir, consultant dermatology at PSRI Hospital, New Delhi, explains that the spray can expose the face to harmful chemicals, potentially causing irritation or allergies. Additionally, he talks about how the fine hairs it reveals are often insignificant and do not need to be removed.

Dr Amit Bangia, associate director, dermatologist, Asian Hospital, Faridabad, shares similar concerns about the psychological impact of using hair identifier sprays. They warned that the product could increase self-consciousness and lead to a cycle of insecurity and excessive hair removal. This can have a negative impact on self-esteem and overall well-being.

Dr Sapna Kamlani, Consultant – Dermatologist, Jupiter Hospital, Pune, warns about the potential risks associated with the spray. She explains that the product can cause respiratory problems due to inhalation of white clouds. Additionally, it may cause dryness or allergic reactions in individuals with sensitive skin.

Additionally, dermatologists stress that the spray can lead to an unhealthy obsession with facial hair, leading to over-removal and skin irritation. They encourage individuals to focus on self-acceptance and avoid unnecessary procedures that could harm their skin and mental health.

Alternatives to hair identifier spray

Instead of relying on viral hair identifier sprays, dermatologists recommend looking for healthier and more effective alternatives. These include:

Professional hair removal methods: Can provide long-lasting results without the risks associated with laser hair removal or electrolysis sprays.

Natural hair removal methods: Shaving, waxing, or tweezing can be used to remove visible facial hair, but it is essential to follow proper techniques to avoid skin irritation.

Self-acceptance: Embracing natural beauty and accepting imperfections can help increase self-esteem and reduce the desire for excessive hair removal.
