International Tiger Day 2024, also called Global Tiger Day 2024, is celebrated every year on July 29 to raise awareness about this magnificent but endangered animal. The day commemorates the collective effort of 13 tiger range countries that came together to create TX2, the global goal of doubling the wild tiger population by 2022.
International Tiger Day 2024: History
The day was first introduced in 2010 at the St. Petersburg Tiger Summit. The summit was organized to draw the world’s attention to the steep decline in the tiger population. As a result, the countries participating in the summit declared July 29 as International Tiger Day every year to highlight the importance of protecting tigers from threats such as poaching, habitat loss, human-tiger conflicts, and illegal wildlife trade.
International Tiger Day 2024: Significance
This year International Tiger Day will be celebrated on Monday. The main objective of this day will be to organize programs, competitions and events to raise awareness among people about tiger conservation and the immediate threats to the majestic cat. The main objective of celebrating this day will be to urge the international community to intensify wildlife conservation efforts. The goal can be achieved through collective efforts to expand protected areas, promote sustainable livelihoods for local communities and maintain adequate forest area in tiger roaming countries.
Tigers are renowned worldwide for their power, beauty and charm, they also play a vital role in preserving ecosystem balance. Being one of the top predators, they have the power to control the amount of prey and contribute to maintaining the natural order of forests. The majestic cat is also known as the “umbrella species”, as there are many other creatures that benefit from the same environment necessary for their preservation and protection.
