Anthony Youn, a popular plastic surgeon, addressed a major problem associated with rhinoplasty, also known as a ‘nose job’, on the Pursuit of Wellness podcast. It is a plastic surgery that alters the shape and size of the nose to achieve facial harmony. Noses that are crooked, bulbous or upturned – different from the traditional nose shape, are often considered ‘ugly’. In the quest to achieve perfect beauty, these unique nose types are altered to conform to societal standards. However, instead of feeling beautiful and happy, satisfaction is rarely achieved.
When the host asked Yoon why people often get revision surgery after having nose surgery, Yoon said that it is true. “People who have nose surgery have the highest rate of revision. And that’s one of the reasons I don’t like it. And so, the problem with nose surgery is that whenever you have nose surgery, whenever you make a cut on the body, you create scar tissue. Studies have shown that from a normal speaking distance, if you have literally one millimeter of scar tissue or 1 millimeter of asymmetry on your nose, it can be seen from a normal speaking distance.”
He added, “And so, the problem with that is that it’s out of your control as the surgeon. So, you might get someone who has some scar tissue that develops and it looks like their bump is still back, or has come back a little bit. And now, they’re unhappy, and they want another operation. The problem is if you bring them back for surgery, you’re going to create more scar tissue. And you don’t have control over that scar tissue and it can kind of spiral down as it can with people who get a lot of nose surgery.”
Some people also commented on it and shared their own similar experiences. “It’s true I had nose surgery 2 times, once normal and once revised and my nose is still not perfect, I’m thinking of getting it done a third time but after hearing this video I don’t think I will,” one person wrote. Others were happy to be born with a beautiful nose. “Most people who have plastic surgery always come back for more and can’t stop. So yes, I’m glad I have a beautiful nose.”
