India’s obesity epidemic: Dosuals on high food in salt and sugar, workplace tension and poor sleep, disclosure to the lenset study. Mint

Date:

In India, 21.8 crore men and 23.1 crore women, a total of 44.9 crore or about one third of the country’s estimated population, would suffer from overweight or obesity by 2050, predicted a study published in the lenset.

The study states that one of the main reasons to run obesity in the country is an increase in consumption of high processed foods in salt, sugar and fat, study.

Obesity in adulthood is also caused by childhood malnutrition, which triggers the accumulation of energy in fat tissues. This increases the risk of early onset of a host such as type 2 diabetes, heart diseases and certain types of cancer.

“Multinational Food and Drinking Corporations and Fast-Food Chains are transferring their investment from high-or-ore countries to lower and medium-income countries, where population growth, per capita income improvement and weak rules have created markets for expansion. Between 2009 and 2019, Cameroon, India and Vietnam saw the greatest annual growth in the sale of ultra-produced food and drinks.

According to the study, obesity and overweight prevalence among boys in India increased from 0.46 crores to 1.3 crore in 2021 in 1990, and it is estimated to increase to 1.6 crore by 2050. Among the girls, it increased from 0.45 crores in 1990 to 1.24 crore in 2021, and in 2050 was a project to grow to 1.44 core.

As Indian express The report, a medical professional, Aparna Govil Bhaskar, who leads the scientific committee for India’s obesity and metabolic surgery society, said: “Increased urbanization has reduced physical activity, prolonged time and desk-bound jobs. A change towards refined carbohydrates, high, processed foods in transfrity and sugars has contributed significantly to weight gain. -The stress related to work, poor sleep and mental health disorders have been linked to obesity. ,

Current government policies are inadequate

The current government policies are unlikely to stop the tide of obesity epidemic as only 40 percent of the countries had an operational policy, strategy or action plan to address it. The study said that this policy coverage was reduced by less and only 10 percent in moderate income countries.

Globally, half of all adults and one -third of children and teenagers will become overweight or thicker by 2050, the study states.

The study also states that the increasing prevalence of obesity in lower and medium-oriented countries can cripple health systems with an additional burden of joint-disease with alternate childhood malnutrition and wide infectious diseases.
