Indian woman in viral photo criticised for ‘protein-filled diet’: ‘Tons of carbs and fat’

An X user in India is being criticised for showing a plate full of food and describing it as a “protein-rich diet”, while according to many, it is high in carbohydrates and not as high in protein as he claimed.

The viral photo of Dr Sheetal Yadav’s food plate attracted many comments on X. (X/@Sheetal2242)

On Saturday, Dr Sheetal Yadav, who is an assistant professor according to her bio on X, shared a photo of a plate containing a large amount of sprouts, a peeled banana, two pieces of apple, two dates, two pieces of walnuts and four almonds.

The post soon went viral and caught the attention of the nutrition and fitness online community in India and abroad.

Swedish doctor Andreas Einfeldt, founder and CEO of Diet Doctor, said the food on his plate contained less protein than the calculations made on his nutrition app.

She added, “According to @JoinHava photo tracking, it only has 13 grams of protein and a lot of carbohydrates and fat. This is a very low protein diet (8% of calories).”

Another doctor, US-based Ken De Berry, described the post as “misinformation”.

“It’s just lacking in protein,” said Thomas Penn Band, an Axe user from Florida.

Readers added context to the post using the community notes feature on X. The note said, “This plate would have about 15.3 g of protein (banana: 1.5 g, almonds: 0.8 g, walnuts: 0.8 g, 1/4 apple < 0.1 g, mung bean sprouts (50 g): 12 g, dates: 0.5 g), which means about 15% of the calories are from protein, which is not considered high protein."

Dr Sheetal Yadav’s viral post on X garnered over four million views in three days and over 700 quotes.

Take a look at the viral post:

Nutrition and fitness coach Dr Neha Chawla said though Dr Yadav’s plate of sprouts, fruits and nuts isn’t rich in protein, it is “far from lacking in nutrients.”

“It can be a valuable component of a varied diet that ensures a complete amino acid profile,” he said.

“…This food provides a variety of nutrients and may contribute to overall health. It is certainly more nutritious than chole bhature.”
