Cancer surgeon Dr Ash K Tiwari explains how lifestyle choices can affect cancer and help control it.
On the final day of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2024, cancer surgeon Dr Ash K Tiwari spoke about the importance of regulating one’s diet and metabolism in the fight against cancer. In a session on the fight against cancer in India, Dr. Tiwari talked about the rising cases of prostate cancer in India, the impact of pollution on the disease and how it can be tackled.
Dr. Ash K Tiwari, System Chair Professor of Urology ICAHN School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and Director of the Center of Excellence in Prostate Cancer, was in conversation with Sanchita Sharma, Senior Communications Officer, WHO India, at HTLS 2024, where he spoke. About the prevalence of cancer in India. He said, “18 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year. One in five people knows someone with cancer. We lose 9 million people to this disease every year.”
As Sanchita Sharma asked Dr. Tiwari about the impact of pollution and smoking on pollution and how India has combated it. “There are a few things we have done to curb cancer. One of them is something that every Indian knows about – smoking. It is one of the main reasons why cancer occurs in many other parts of the body including the lungs and prostate Can,” Dr. Tiwari replied.
However, he said that there are many other things that Indians take for granted. He added, “There are many other things we don’t pay attention to that can play a big role in reducing cancer. That’s our metabolic habits, diet, management of obesity and diabetes.” With inflammation and a body like this, everything goes to the extreme.”
Dr. Tiwari also talked about the rising rates of prostate cancer in India. “The good news is that if we detect it in time, it is 95% treatable. There is talk of ‘In Time’ in India. In the US, 90% are curable, in India 50-50,” he said.
