It is often said that inspiration comes from everyday experiences, and this is true for 18-year-old Samuel Harshith Tsapa, who secured 24th rank in the NEET UG 2023 exam. His decision to pursue a career in medicine was inspired by seeing the dedication of doctors and healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although his excellent rank could have got him a place in prestigious institutes like AIIMS, he chose a college to study MBBS that was more in line with his aspirations.

Samuel, who secured an impressive 24th rank in NEET, is currently studying at the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. CMC, located close to his home, is ranked third among the top medical institutions in India, according to the NIRF 2024 rankings. Despite the opportunity to get into AIIMS, Samuel opted for CMC on the advice of his family and teachers.

He highlighted the importance of using a focused strategy, especially short notes, in your exam preparation. Samuel constantly revised these notes, updating and refining them as the exam date approached. His disciplined approach of regular revision and brief note taking played a vital role in his success.

After scoring an impressive 97.4 percent marks in his Class 12 board exams, Samuel is now considering his career options after completing MBBS, with a keen interest in doing research in the medical field. For his NEET preparation, he relied heavily on NCERT books, especially for Chemistry. He practiced all the textual questions, examples and exercises, which he summarized into short notes to facilitate easy revision. This systematic approach enabled him to quickly grasp key concepts. Additionally, whenever he had spare time, Samuel practiced with NS Awasthi and worked on previous years’ JEE Main questions to further strengthen his understanding. His strategic preparation and constant revision were instrumental in his academic success.

Apart from traditional study methods, Samuel used online platforms like YouTube for his Biology and Physics preparation. If he could not immediately find an answer to a question, he would set it aside and return to it later, demonstrating the importance of persistence.

He said that effective time management is important for success in the NEET UG exam, noting that he had to solve about five Physics questions in the last minutes of the exam. Samuel also incorporated resources like YouTube channel ‘Beat the NEET’ and Memo NEET app into his study routine. Additionally, they used audio versions of NCERT textbooks, listening to chapters through earphones, allowing them to absorb information on the go.
