If you are fasting for nine days, it is advisable to keep a few things in mind to remain alert, attentive and energetic during this period. Everyone’s method of fasting is different. While some people may break it after sunset and worship the goddess for the entire nine days. Some people may do intermittent fasting. It is important to consider health conditions before deciding to fast.

Keep taking sips of lukewarm water in between. Ayurvedic expert Dr. Somasundari Menon says, “Eat satvik diet during religious fasting. Make sure you stay hydrated with coconut water for electrolytes, fresh juices to boost stamina and buttermilk to detoxify the body. Calorie-free beverages like herbal tea, lemon juice and black coffee can be consumed.

Onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food should be strictly avoided. Avoid sour fruits and include fluid-rich vegetables like cucumber, spinach, celery.
