Dr. Sameer Bhati on HMPV: It is believed that a respiratory virus in China has completely shaken the health system there. Its name is HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus). HMPV has also knocked in India. People are in fear about this disease. Some are comparing it with Covid-19. However, the Indian government has appealed to the people that there is no need to worry about this. The increase in its cases will not lead to an outbreak like Covid. But according to experts, this is not a new disease. Then the question arises that where did this disease come from and how old is it? News 18 asked health expert regarding this Dr Sameer Bhati Talked to.
how dangerous is this
Dr. Sameer Bhati told that HMPV is similar to normal influenza. Common cold also occurs in this. This is a respiratory virus which causes infection in the lungs and respiratory tract. It generally causes conditions similar to those that occur in the common cold or flu. Infection with this virus is common in people already suffering from such diseases or allergies. It only causes respiratory problems. Generally it infects the upper respiratory tract or sometimes the lower respiratory tract. This also causes cold and cough. Generally, it does not have any very serious symptoms. However in some cases it can be serious. This happens more in small children and the elderly. This is a self-limiting virus which completes its cycle in the body and dies within a few days. Since this is not a new virus and we know a lot about it. Therefore, till now it has been seen that no specific new strain has emerged. That means it changes its form very rarely and even if it changes, it is as dangerous as Corona. Corona was a completely new virus and we did not know much about it.
Where did this disease start
Dr. Sameer Bhati Told that HMPV is not new. It is 25 years old. That means this virus was identified 25 years ago. Its first case came in Netherlands in 2001. In 2005 it was also identified in America and in 2006 it was also seen in India. Therefore this is not a new virus. We know a lot about this.
How contagious is this disease?
Dr. Sameer Bhati told that this disease is contagious but it is difficult to say that it is as contagious as Corona. Since this virus is self-limiting and does not mutate much, its spread is limited. But this does not mean that there is no need to avoid it.
How to avoid its infection
According to Dr. Sameer Bhati, according to the guidelines issued by the government, we should avoid this. If this is the case somewhere then wearing a mask is necessary. Since it can spread from one person to another like Corona, there is a need to be cautious in contact with each other. Irrespective of any respiratory infection, tissue paper or handkerchief should be used while coughing. Hygiene should always be taken care of. Hands should be washed before touching anything. Especially in those places where the risk of this respiratory infection is high.
