Sumita Sinha’s condition worsened in the fourth class.

We often come across people whose work and teachings inspire us and guide us towards a set career path. This sentiment is reflected in the inspiring journey of Dr. Sumita Sinha, Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS), Ballia, who overcame a serious illness in childhood and later rose to fame in the medical field. Inspired by a doctor’s compassionate smile during treatment, his story shows that with the right motivation, anything is possible.

In an interview with Local 18, Dr. Sumita Sinha shared details about her career journey. Originally from Ranchi, she is now the CMS of Ballia District Women’s Hospital. She grew up in Ranchi, where her mother worked as a teacher and her father was an engineer at the Heavy Engineering Corporation (HCE), a major industrial project built in 1964–65 under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru. He has three sisters and completed his schooling in Ranchi.

In the fourth grade, Dr. Sinha’s condition became so bad that he had to be taken to AIIMS for a major illness. He shared that he had not initially thought of pursuing a career in medicine, but a nurse who looked after him every morning and evening left a lasting impression. The nurse’s kindness and kind smile amazed him and inspired him to pursue a career as a doctor. He recalled, “The nurse’s nature was so caring and kind that it inspired me to become a doctor like her, to bring happiness to my patients only through kind words.”

From there, Dr. Sinha began his journey in medicine, preparing for his post-graduation and MD in Bihar. His first posting as a doctor was also in Ballia, where he learned a lot.

Today, working as CMS at Ballia District Women’s Hospital, Dr. Sinha follows her role model by greeting her patients with a smile. Despite several attempts to find the nurse who inspired her so many years ago, she has still not been able to locate her. His journey highlights the power of compassion in shaping lives and careers.
