Dr. Sabdra highlighted the dental risks of excessive alcohol consumption:

  • The risk of staining increased: Many alcoholic beverages, especially with artificial colors or dark alcohol, can stain teeth. Since Holi contains a lot of colored powder, these pigments can stick to alcohol-coated teeth, deteriorate.
  • Dry mouth (zerostomia): Alcohol dehydrates the body and reduces the production of saliva, causing dry mouth. Saliva is necessary to wash food particles and neutralize acid, so a dry mouth increases the risk of cavities and bad breath. Chew Chinese-free gum to encourage saliva production.
  • Acidic erosion: Some alcoholic beverages, especially mixed with sour or soda, are highly acidic. This acid can weaken enamel, which can make teeth susceptible to decay and sensitivity.
  • Increase in Chinese Risk: Many Holi beverages, such as dissolved thandai or sweet cocktails contain high amounts of sugar. Sugar feeds bacteria in the mouth, causing plaque buildups, cavities and gum disease.
  • Risk of grinding teeth (Bruxism): Cannabis can sometimes cause a jaw condensing or tooth grinding, either during drugs or later. This can cause teeth, sensitivity and even jaw pain over time.

Dental hygiene suggestions on eating and drinking on Holi

With some precautionary measures, you can protect your dental health. Dr. Sabdra shared these tips:

  • Rinse after eating and drinking: Rub your mouth with water after consuming Holi-inspired colored foods, sweets and drinks to wash stains and sugar.
  • Limit sugars: Enjoy Gujia and Mitai in moderation to prevent cavities and plaque buildups.
  • Use a straw for colored drinks: Stop the staining using a straw for Thandai and other Holi drinks.
  • Avoid acidic and sticky foods: Foods such as tamarind-based chats can weaken enamel, while the sticky dessert sticks to the teeth for a long time.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking a lot of water helps to maintain saliva production, which naturally protects teeth.
  • Later use a tongue cleaner: Remove food stains and bacteria from your tongue for overall oral hygiene.
  • Apply lip balm or petroleum jelly: Helps prevent stains around the lips and mouth.
  • Later oil pulling oil to remove stains from drinks and sweets: Oil pulling (coconut or sesame oil in your mouth for 10–15 minutes) may help remove residual colored stains later, but this is not a foolish preventive measure.
