HMPV cases in India: After two cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) were detected in the state, the Karnataka government on Monday urged people not to panic as the virus is not as contagious as COVID-19. The Directorate of Medical Education, Karnataka issued an advisory titled ‘Don’t panic, be careful’ after two cases of HMPV were reported in Bengaluru.

Emphasizing that the respiratory virus mainly affects children, causing infections similar to the common cold, the Karnataka government said in a release that hospitals will be equipped to treat influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI). ) have been instructed to report the cases.

“The Government of India and health authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with no significant increase in HMPV cases within India as per the latest data. There is no cause for concern, but preventive measures are recommended,” the official statement read.

According to Karnataka government statement, HMPV causes

-Flu-like symptoms including cough, fever, nasal congestion and difficulty breathing.

-In more severe cases, it can cause bronchitis or pneumonia, especially in young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

How is HMPV spread?

The official statement also said that the HMPV virus is spread by respiratory droplets, close personal contact and by touching the mouth, nose or eyes after touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.

How to prevent hMPV from spreading?

  • Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap.
  • Avoid public places if you have symptoms.
  • Do not re-use tissue paper or handkerchief.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Avoid sharing towels and linens.
  • Minimize touching eyes, nose and mouth.

• Avoid spitting in public places.

• Wearing a mask in crowded areas can reduce the risk of transmission.

According to the Karnataka government statement, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV.

Management focuses on reducing symptoms with supportive care, including rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications for pain, fever, and congestion.

Severe cases may require hospitalization for oxygen therapy or IV fluids.
